Super Bowl XLIX Cocktails

Super Bowl XLIX - Super Bowl CocktailsOn February 1, the great American secular holiday known as Super Bowl Sunday will commence. Super Bowl XLIX will not only be the end of a 49 consecutive year streak of using Roman numerals (Super Bowl L will actually be 50), teaching the nation about those antiquated letters for numbers, but hopefully the end of “Deflate-Gate” – seriously, who cares? But I digress…

This year, we’ll see the AFC’s perennial post-season squad, the New England Patriots, take on last year’s champs, the Seattle Seahawks. It’s a classic battle of high-powered offense versus stout, tight defense, and hopefully be more entertaining then last year’s blowout. The most viewed spectacle in America, more than 100 million sets of eyeballs are expected to tune into NBC, keenly watching the matchup, the commercials, and prop bets (How long will it take Idina Menzel to sing the National Anthem? What color hoodie will Bill Belicheck’s wear? How many times will Gisele Bundchen be shown on television? There are quite literally a hundred of them; it’s the biggest day of the year for Vegas). And while the Super Bowl is the culmination of the country’s most popular sporting league’s season, it is really just an excuse to get together with friends and family and drink on Sunday.

So if you’re planning a little Super Bowl soiree and looking for more than just a cooler of beer, we have a few cocktails to try, each with some game time flair.

First thing’s first, the teams:

Super Bowl XLIX Cocktails - New England Patriots - Boston SourHailing from Boston, we have the Evil Empire itself, the New England Patriots. Hoping to put “Spy-Gate,” “Deflate-Gate,” and every other gate behind them with stellar play on the field, the Tom Brady-led squad has been one the NFL’s finest for more than a decade. Going for his fourth Super Bowl win, Brady is the cat to watch, especially when targeting Gronk (Rob Gronkowski), the team’s Shrek-like tight end. If the Seahawks can’t stop this duo, they’re in for a long night.

As a Dolphins’ fan, it tastes a little bitter to give the Patriots their props, but seriously, they’re next level. So we’re raising a glass to the class of the AFC with the classic New England cocktail, the Boston Sour (again, I’m a Dolphins fan – the Pats make me sour).

Boston Sour

  • 2 oz. rye or bourbon
  • 1 egg white
  • ¼ oz. simple syrup
  • ½ oz. lemon juice
  • Seltzer water

   Garnish: lemon slice and cherry

Add first four ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice; shake. Pour into a Collins glass, top with seltzer and garnish with a lemon slice and cherry.

Super Bowl XLIX cocktails - Super Bowl parties - The Rainmaker - Seattle SeahawksStorming Arizona from the Pacific Northwest, we have the Seattle Seahawks. Winners of Super Bowl XLVIII, the team is led by its solid defense, affectionately referred to as the Legion of Boom. With a win on Sunday, this 11-man squad will take a place among the top defenses in NFL history, and deservedly so in this era of offensive prowess.

As a nod to this lights-out D, and the rainy city from which they hail, we’re offering up the Rainmaker cocktail. Using Southern Comfort as the base spirit, it might not exactly scream Seattle, but the name serves, and, Arizona is south of Washington, so take comfort—get it—in that. Boom!

The Rainmaker

Serves 4

  • ¾ cup Southern Comfort
  • ¾ cup cranberry juice
  • 3 tbsp. fresh lime juice
  • 1½ cups shaved ice

Mix all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Serve in wine glasses.
