If you’re looking for some support in your efforts to get off the couch, put Sunday October 21 on your calendar.
That’s the day when Let’s Move Boca, an interactive health and wellness fair for the entire family, will be held at Royal Palm Place in Boca Raton. From 10 a.m.-3 p.m. the event will showcase healthy cooking and nutrition tips, fitness classes, a vendor fair, and a range of activities for both kids and adults.
“Our goal is to create awareness in the community about the obesity epidemic,” says Denise Righetti, chairperson of Let’s Move Boca, “and to give families the tools and resources they need to live a more active and healthy lifestyle.”
Righetti isn’t exaggerating when she describes obesity as an epidemic. According to conservative estimates, one-third of all Americans are more than 30 pounds overweight, and experts predict the number will rise to 50% in a few decades. Busy lifestyles, lack of nutritional awareness and an onslaught of fast food have created dangerous eating patterns for many families, and childhood obesity is increasing at alarming rates.
For an entry fee of $15, participants will receive a t-shirt and access to fitness classes such as Yoga, Zumba, Kickboxing, Jazzercise and more (kids will be admitted free when accompanied by a paid adult). The vendor area will showcase demonstrations of healthy cooking, juicing, and guidelines for better nutrition. There will be a kid’s zone with mini workout stations, and adults will have the opportunity to participate in Boca Raton’s first “Dance Walking” event.
Best of all, 100% of the proceeds will go to a local non-profit, FLIPANY (Florida Introduces Physical Activity and Nutrition to Youth), which works with children, families and seniors throughout Palm Beach County. To register to attend the event, go to LetsMoveBoca.org. And don’t worry---the couch will still be there when you get home.
