New Kid on the Block

It's always a beautiful day when an arts community can welcome a new face. ArtHouse 429, a combination gallery/artist workshop, opens this week in the Northwood Village business district in West Palm Beach. With sculptor William Halliday at the helm, ArtHouse 429 promises to be a nurturing environment for all artists.

The layout of ArtHouse 429 aims to accommodate all forms of contemporary art. Previously a storefront, the location offers 2,000 square feet of interior space, a sculpture garden and a second-floor landing for installations as well as receptions. Halliday's artist studio also connects to the space.

ArtHouse 429 is committed to presenting the work of nationally recognized artists as well as local up and comers. The inaugural exhibition, which opens on January 17 and runs through February 16, features a selection of artists that reflects this goal. Big names include renowned painter Robert Zakanitch, who has shown in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, L.A.-based multimedia artist Cameron Gray and Moscow impressionist Sergey Fedotov. Floridian-based artists, including photographer Cheryl Maeder and sculptor John Martini, who works out of a converted theatre in Key West, will also present.

Following the inaugural exhibition, ArtHouse 429 curator and collage artist Bruce Helander will mount an exhibition. As a curator, Helander has organized shows for art world heavy weights such as Robert Rauschenberg, Dale Chihuly and James Rosenquist. As an artist, he's exhibited in more than 50 museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Helander has also been named a fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts, and has written extensive art criticism for The Huffington Post. For a sneak peek of Helander's work, pick up a copy of the February Palm Beach Illustrated when it hits newsstands on January 20.

Halliday chose the Northwood Village business district because he believes it to be a revitalized locale with the energy and spirit necessary to foster artistic growth. Between the sprawling and versatile space, a commitment to nurturing artists and the guidance of business veterans, ArtHouse 429 is sure to blossom in West Palm Beach.
