Bugatti Rolls Out the Legends

Even if you had a spare $3 million sitting around in a sock drawer, your chances of buying one of the 18 ‘Legend Editions’ of Bugatti’s 268mph Veyron hypercar are pretty much, zip, zero, nada.

With production of the world’s fastest road car finally heading for the checkered flag - a new model is supposedly due at the end of next year - collectors are seemingly standing in line to snap-up for one of the last Veyrons.

At last month’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance weekend in California, Bugatti showed off the entire limited run series of six ‘Legend Editions’ which are named after key people in Bugatti’ storied history.

The first in the series, the Jean-Pierre Wimille, is named after the famous French racing driver who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice for Bugatti. The last in the series, and arguably the most collectible, is the Etore Bugatti, named after the company founder.

Only three examples of the six ‘Legend Editions’ - 18 cars in total - will be built, each with a 2.34 Euro price tag, which translates to $3.14 million at today’s exchange rate. All are reportedly sold.

Also at Pebble Beach, Bugatti unveiled a one-of-a-kind Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse it has just built for a customer in Singapore.

With a rumored sticker price north of $4 million, the elitist-badged ‘Grand Sport Vitesse 1 of 1 Edition’ certainly met founder Ettore Bugatti’s motto “Nothing is too beautiful, nothing is too expensive”.

This stunning two-seater roadster features a funky yellow and black paint scheme that revives a favorite color choice of the Bugatti family. It was used in many of the company’s landmark vehicles, including the legendary Type 41 Royale.

The bumble-bee color scheme also features on the car’s huge alloy wheels, while the yellow front horseshoe grille has the customer’s initials - PL - laser-cut into the metal.

If you remember, the Veyron made its flashy debut way back in 2005 and by the time its 10-year production run ends next year, a total of 450 cars will have been built.

With production finally coming to an end, the rumor mill has begun spinning with details about the Veyron’s replacement.

Word has it that the re-designed Veyron will be unveiled either at the end of next year or in early 2016 with production again limited to 450 cars.

And while Bugatti will stick with its 8-liter 16-cylinder quad turbo engine for the Veyron 2, chances are it will be teamed up with an electric motor to take the maximum power up from today’s 1,200 horsepower to a monster 1,500-hp.

As for that truly gorgeous four-door sedan concept, the Galiber, that Bugatti showed a couple of years back, Volkswagen - Bugatti is part of the VW family - said recently there were no plans to put it into production.
