April 20, 2013  6:00 PM

South Florida’s most celebrated ballroom dance competition is returning on Saturday, April 20, when the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts presents the 20th annual Reach for the Stars. The annual fundraiser, hosted by the Young Friends of the Kravis Center, benefits the Kravis Center‘s S*T*A*R (Students and Teachers Arts Resource) Series and education programs.

The evening’s twinkle-toe match-up will be an All Star Ballroom Dance Competition, bringing back many previous Reach for the Stars contenders:

  • J. Gwendolynne Berry: One of the Swirl Girls from The Palm Beach Post (2010)
  • Suzanne Boyd: CBS12 News This Morning (2008, 2009, 2010)

The competing celebrities will be paired with some of South Florida’s top professional dancers, including Angelo Caruso, Sandra Caruso and Livia Maciel from Caruso Dancesport; Alex Foraponov from Dance With Us Studios; and Diana Heilig, Michael Housel and Armando Vega-Perez from Dance Tonight.

The judges for the upcoming Reach for the Stars ballroom dance competition will be Steven Caras, former NYC Ballet Dancer, photographer, keynote speaker and the subject of a Public Television documentary airing nationwide through 2014; actress, singer and classically trained dancer Mia Matthews; and Kravis Center board member and President, Hollywood Media Corp., Laurie Silvers.

Liz Quirantes of CBS12, who was a dance competitor in 2010 and 2011, is once again serving as Mistress of Ceremonies, with former talk radio personality and previous dance competitor in 2010 and judge Josh Cohen returning as backstage correspondent introducing the dancers.

Guests will begin the evening at 6 p.m. in Dreyfoos Hall for the ballroom dance competition.  Following the presentation of the coveted mirror ball trophies, attendees will have plenty of fuel for the festivities, with a tasting of gourmet food and fine wine from numerous local restaurants and vendors, including Angle at the Ritz-Carlton, Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza, Cabo Flats, Café Centro, Café Chardonnay, Cha Cha’s Palm Beach, Echo, Havana, Lantana Jacks, Leila Restaurant, Pampas Grille, PB Catch Seafood and Raw Bar, Seasons 52 and Temple Orange at the Ritz-Carlton.
