On Saturday, October 19 from 1 to 9 p.m., the Friends of Jonathan Dickinson State Park are proudly presenting Fire Fest 2013: a fun-filled, Halloween-themed family event educating the community about prescribed fire and safety awareness in Florida! This annual event achieves Jonathan Dickinson’s mission to increase awareness and appreciation of the park’s unique flora and fauna, recreational opportunities, and rich natural history.
Did you know prescribed fires are absolutely necessary to our local ecosystem and community? Upon attending Fire Fest, learn how prescribed burning preserves our urban interface, improves habitat for native wildlife and plant species, and replenishes the environment’s nutrients. Learn even more about Florida’s iconic Scrub-jay and her dependency on prescribed fire!
Prescribed burn demonstrations led by the Florida Park Service’s District Five Fire Team will take place twice throughout the event. The presentation will include the ignition of the fire, “brush” trucks ready to spray water, exposition of firefighting hand-tools, and Q & A during and after the demonstration. All team members will be in full fire-gear.
Inside the Kimbell Education Center visitors will enjoy interactive exhibits, relax and watch a short film, or get creative with crafts, activities, and scavenger hunts! Outside, visitors can enjoy live music, guided nature walks, geocaching activities, live animal demonstrations, campfire stories and marshmallow roasting, hayrides, and a spooky trail. Visitors may also meet and take pictures with Smokey Bear or the Muck Monster of Lake Worth Lagoon!
So come out and spend quality time with the family and join us for an exciting, educational day!
Park entry is $6 for a carload of up to 8 people.
All activities are free except $1 Hayrides, $5 Bounce House and Game Alley, and $10 Swamp Buggy Trail Rides.
Concessions will be available.
