HAIRSPRAY at the Lake Worth Playhouse

Stephen Brown

Change is in the hair? Lake Worth Playhouse’s July (5-29) production is singing and dancing its way toward change with the Tony Award-winning musical Hairspray.

Hairspray the musical - Lake Worth Playhouse - Tracy Turnblad and Link Larkin - Seaweed Stubbs and Motormouth Maybelle

Based on the John Waters (of Pink Flamingos and pencil mustache fame) film of the same name, Hairspray takes the audience back in time to 1962 Baltimore, where racial tensions were running high and the sounds of Motown/R&B were matriculating throughout popular culture. The musical about the “pleasantly plump” Tracy Turnblad defying racial stigmas and stereotypes on “The Corny Collins Show” is more than just an escape into some great tunes but a social commentary on the very real injustices that pervaded 1960s America, with some persisting even today. The big-haired Turnblad takes the stage, finding love in teen heartthrob Link Larkin, breaking down the walls of segregation, all the while discovering that her inner strength empowers not just her but also those around her.

  • The Broadway musical Hairspray takes the stage July 5 to 29 with tickets costing $26 and $30. Show times are as follows: Friday, 8 p.m.; Saturday, 2 and 8 p.m.; Sunday, 2 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, please call the box office, 561-586-6410.
