Best PBC Breakfast

Stephen Brown

When it comes to breakfast spots, consider myself a weekend egg and bacon connoisseur; short order, greasy spoon diners is what I consider fine dining. People may say, "What’s the big deal? Anyone can fry an egg and crisp some bacon," but I cry blasphemy at these generalities. This is a gastro-genre that is time honored and rigorously tested. Slinging eggs in a consistent clip, perfectly cooked and gently placed on golden brown toast with a side of bacon that’s crispy but not overly so is a work of art in my book. Here are a few of my favorite breakfast spots, in no particular order. Vote for your favorite and, as always, write-ins are welcomed and encouraged.

 Palm Beach's Best Breakfast

This Is It Cafe, Northwood

In the heart of the historic Northwood District, This Is It Cafe is one of the busiest breakfast spots in West Palm Beach. This short-order greasy spoon diner has developed somewhat of a cult following ("busy" is an understatement) and deservedly so: The food is great, service is amiable and the atmosphere is jovial—a great way to start the day. And though This Is It is packed for breakfast (starting at 6:30 a.m.), the turnover rate is fast—like 15 minutes fast if you’re in a hurry. Try This Is It’s waffle special: malted waffles (that’s right, malted) with an egg and bacon topper for less than $8—as good as it gets. This Is It is also open for lunch and dinner, serving some down-home comfort food. 444 24th St., West Palm Beach, 561-655-3301

Ganim's Juno Beach Cafe, Juno Beach

eggs benedict - breakfast Juno Beach - fast breakfast   Ganim’s Juno Beach Cafe is famous for its skillets. With all-the breakfast time favorites mixed in a piping hot iron pan, the skillets are large (I dare you to finish one) and delicious. A personal favorite is The Champ, where a menagerie of melted cheese and eggs swim in a sea of savory sausage gravy. Not to be outshined, the omelet selection is large, while the house specials are special for a reason: The Hush-Wee and Eggs is an awesome meal, with ground beef, onions and pine nuts mixed with scrambled eggs over hash browns, and a side of Lebanese bread, feta cheese and olives will have you setting the alarm for Saturday morning to score a seat, though breakfast is served all day (7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday; 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday and Sunday). 13967 U.S. Hwy. 1, Juno Beach, 561-622-1533, junobeachcafe.com

Howley’s, West Palm Beach

Like stepping back in time, Howley’s is a 1950s throwback that happily plucks the good old days chord—every time I walk into the place, I hope beyond hope to see Marty McFly whizz by with Biff Tannen in hot pursuit. Open nearly 24 hours a day (7 a.m. to 5 a.m., Monday through Saturday; 7 a.m. to 2 a.m., Sunday—hey, they have to take a break at some point), breakfast is an anytime affair, and I have to admit, I have only eaten here in the wee hours of the a.m. time swing, when street lamps light the way and the birds aren’t so chirpy. But if early morning form is anything like late night dining, this place is tops. The Night Owl Special hits the spot anytime you need a caloric boost, and if you’re into pancakes (and let's be honest, who isn’t?), Momma’s Hot Cakes are buttermilk blasts of pillowy goodness. 4700 S. Caffé Luna Rosa, Delray Beach

At the east end of Atlantic Ave., where the Atlantic Ocean begins, sits a rose on the beach. Caffé Luna Rosa, an Italian spot along South Ocean Boulevard, boasts one tasty breakfast and brunch menu to go along with its p.m. selections. The happening sidewalk bistro is the place to grab a Bakon Bloody Mary—that’s right, I said Bakon—it even comes garnished with a mini BLT if you’re nice. Pair that with their poached yolky-tastic eggs benedict with real American bacon (Canadian bacon is ham, HAM!) and a potato pancake, and you’re in for one caloric-busting treat. 34 S. Ocean Blvd., Delray Beach, 561-274-9404, caffelunarosa.com

Hurricane Cafe, Juno Beach

On Saturday and Sunday, a seat at Hurricane Cafe is one of the toughest to score in Juno Beach. The casual beachside bistro is small in stature but big in flavor, serving truly inventive twists on traditional breakfast favorites. Hurricane’s lobster, corn and spinach quiche is a showstopper—the combination of lobster, spinach, cream corn and cheese is one I never thought of before, but certainly cannot live without now. And for the French toast aficionado, the Banana Praline French Toast is heavenly—starting with a cinnamon and vanilla bath, the eggy bread is topped with sliced bananas and a homemade praline sauce that may change your life, seriously. Breakfast is brief, 7-11 a.m., so set the alarm and get there early, while the lunch and dinner menus dabble in some comfort food you won’t want to miss. 14050 US Hwy. 1, Juno Beach, 561-630-2012, hurricanecafe.com

Benny's on the Beach - Lake Worth - breakfast - fast - greasy spoon

Benny’s on the Beach, Lake Worth

For those in the know, Benny’s on the Beach has some of the best waterfront views in the county (270 degrees of prime Atlantic real estate ain’t bad), and the breakfast, well, any die-hard pier fisherman will tell you there is no other place like it. Open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Benny’s is located on the Lake Worth pier, overpowering the catch of the day with the scents of fried eggs, French toast and bacon in the a.m. and burgers, fries and chicken wings in the p.m.—it is literally the best smelling pier in town. The breakfast is a worth a trip, whether you’re fisherman, beachcomber or just plain hungry. With all the traditional favorites hitting the menu, for those having trouble deciding, try the Crab Cake Benedict with home fries or the hearty Fisherman breakfast plate, all the standards piled high. 10 Ocean Blvd., Lake Worth, 561-582-9001, bennysonthebeach.com
