Lights Out at Rosso Italia

Stephen Brown

Consciousness, the intangible spark that distinguishes humanity, would be nothing without the senses. The jumbled mess of receptors firing responses in our brain gives food its flavor, sunrises their golden hues and a feather its delicate touch.Lights Out - blindfolded dinner at Rosso Italia - Stand Among Friends For most, the five senses go about their daily business unimpeded, but for others, one or more senses may have been lost or never developed. For those with all working five, it’s hard to imagine lacking something that is so inescapably part of your daily life. But these disabilities are not debilitating. The remarkable thing about the senses is when one or more is disabled, the others pick up the slack with great acclivity and astute precision. When blind, sound, smells and taste take on sharpness not known to those with sight. Stand Among Friends, a non-profit dedicated to helping “college students and adults with disabilities prepare for, seek and secure active employment,” wants to show people without disabilities what living with visual impairment is like at the dining event, Lights Out: A Visually Impaired Dining Experience, to be held October 18 at Boca Raton’s Rosso Italia.

Lights Out is a unique opportunity for people with sight to step into the shoes of someone with a visual impairment. Blindfolded when they arrive, diners will experience dining out without the benefit of sight. They will be seated, eat and even enjoy a cocktail in the dark. This event not only raises awareness about the difficulties faced by some members of our communities, but it also gives diners a truly unique dining experience.

A dining concept that has been widely touted in Europe and some of the more progressive food cities like San Francisco and Manhattan, dining in the dark experiences are designed to “extend the senses,” relying more on taste, touch and smell than normal. Lights Out takes this concept and turns it into a learning process, all in the name of a good cause.
