On a Mission to Remission

More than 25 million Americans live with diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While complete remission of Type 2 diabetes is rare, a new study completed by the CDC and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that, with changes in diet and exercise, patients can see partial remission. Participants decreased daily caloric intake to between 1,200 and 1,800 calories a day and increased physical activity to around three hours per week. With these changes, 11.5 percent of patients saw blood sugar levels dip back to a normal, pre-diabetes level after one year. Though modest, these results illustrate a correlation between a healthy lifestyle and diabetes remission.
