National Poetry Month

Channel your inner Robert Frost or Maya Angelou this month—April is National Poetry Month. Just for the occasion, accomplished poet and Palm Beach Atlantic University associate professor David Athey has crafted odes to Palm Beach. Enjoy his creative local musings below.

LAKE TRAIL

Green horses!

Green horses!

Beyond the hedges,

ponytail palms gallop

across the blue grass

of the sky, a polo field

above the island.

Green horses!

Green horses!

ISLA DE FLORIDA

The light

skitters across the water

and ripples up a golden map

that shows the Gulf Stream

how to keep flowing home

into the flow. We flop

into history, a garden

of surf and nautilus shells

that are also maps

leading inward. We dive

into a blossoming tide, rising,

rising, but not too far away

from this treasure island

of flowers.

KAYAK A CAPELLA

I’m drifting in middle tide

of the Intracoastal Waterway

while cranes play poets,

flapping stanzas in standing water.

Above the feathers, a jet

blasts into the blue,

engine like techno music,

becoming silent over the ocean.

And a crane whoops

a final note, perfectly

echoing into sunset.

Now begins the song

between land and the island.

Kayak a capella.
