Spring Harvest: Radishes

Stephen Brown

For many, radishes are an acquired taste; for others, a salad just is not complete without a thinly sliced helping of the edible root. In South Florida, spring and summer are the seasons for sweeter, crunchier radishes, from heirloom varieties like the Bunny Tail (mostly red with white tip) and Sicily Giant (as the name suggests, a large variety) to the more interesting color offerings like Snow Belle (white) and Plum Purple.

radishes - Florida springtime crop   Available at a variety of green and fresh markets from a number of local growers, our personal favorite come from Indiantown grower Kai-Kai Farm, a staple at the Palm Beach Gardens GreenMarket on Sundays and the Jupiter Riverwalk Green and Artisan Market on Friday evenings (under the Indiantown bridge—only open through April). The D’Avignon variety is the best bang for the buck. Growing long and tapered, almost like a carrot, it has that classic radish-red color with a white tip and is great in salads or stirfry. For those looking for a radish with striking color, Kai-Kai’s Amethyst (F1) is the root for you: As the name suggests, it's purple-hued on the outside with a white center that is mild in flavor.

Florida Relish for Hotdogs

April means one thing: baseball. For that ballpark hotdog, this radish-heavy relish makes for the perfect condiment. Give this Fresh From Florida recipe a try.
