Under the Sea

The quest to treat pancreatic cancer has moved underwater. The National Institutes of Health has awarded Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (772-242-2400) a $345,716 grant to identify natural marine products that have the potential to treat pancreatic cancer. The principal researchers, Esther Guzmán, Ph.D. (below), and Amy Wright, Ph.D., have already identified more than 100 marine products with cancer-fighting properties and last year were awarded a U.S. patent for the use of manzamine A, a product derived from a marine sponge, as treatment in pancreatic cancer.
