FLAVOR Palm Beach 2013

Stephen Brown

Although Palm Beach’s restaurant season heats up in fall, September has quietly become one of the tastiest months of the year. Flavor Palm Beach begins serving dishes September 1 and carries on throughout the month, giving foodies and the epi-curious an opportunity to try special prix-fixe menus featuring three-course meals for lunch ($20) and dinner ($30 or $35) from participating restaurants across the map, from Boca to Jupiter.

Flavor Palm Beach - Grand Tasting - Palm Beach County restuarant specials

Now in its sixth year, Flavor Palm Beach has evolved from a promotional tool for area restaurants during the lean, pre-fall month to a highly anticipated dining event. September has traditionally been a slow month for restaurants in the area—a bit early even for the earliest snowbirds and a hectic time for families struggling to get school year bedtimes back on track. But Flavor changed the paradigm over the past five years, creating an opportunity for diners to expand their culinary horizons with prix-fixe options that won’t break the bank. The menu format—three-course meals for less than $40—also allows for chefs to experiment with flavor combinations as they prepare for fall’s menu construction. For some restaurants, Flavor Palm Beach has become a preview of sorts for the year to come as kitchens shape and refine new recipes and entrees. Some of the items that have us eagerly waiting for September are III Forks’ pretzel-crusted crab cakes, Max’s Harvest’s kimchee-brasied akaushi shortrib, anything from Chef Lindsay Autry and Sundy House (though the shrimp pappardelle sounds especially tasty), Imoto’s curried beef wontons, and the wiener schnitzel from Josef’s Table.

Flavor Palm Beach - dining out and around Palm Beach County

2013’s installment is set to be a banner year, with 38 restaurants already joining the party as of August 1—and many more to come. To kick-start the month-long dining experience, Palm Beach Motor Cars will host a Grand Tasting on Thursday, September 5. And it's not called "grand" for nothing: Participating restaurants, chefs, sommeliers and mixologists will be on hand offering a sampling of what’s in store for diners throughout the county. Among the many delectable bites and inventive sips, the tasting is truly a party, with an array of games, live performances and a silent auction to keep the conversations going, while an ice lounge will cool the scene with a vodka ice luge and plenty of chilled bevvies. What’s more, proceeds from the event will benefit Share Our Strength, a national nonprofit dedicated to eradicating childhood hunger in the United States, making this a party with a purpose.

  • Tickets for the Grand Tasting cost $55 in advance, $75 at the door.
  • The party is set for 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 5.

Flavor Palm Beach - Parents Night Out - Grand Tasting - Palm Beach County restaurant month

On Thursday, September 19, North Palm’s Old Port Cove will host Parents Night Out, a three-course meal for the grown-ups while the kids enjoy dinner and movie elsewhere. The menu features first course choices of ponzu calamari, poached pear salad or lobster bisque; second course choices of pan-seared scallops, grilled chicken paillard, rigatoni bolognese, steak Diane or salmon brûlée; and third course options of a sorbet trio, the cheesecake of the day or warm sour cream fudge cake.
