Over the course of four years, Palm Beach Atlantic University’s theatrical offerings have blossomed in the heart of downtown West Palm Beach. The Fern Street Theatre, a 12,000-sqaure-foot facility complete with a black box theatre, classrooms and performance space for workshops and studio classes, has allowed for the school’s theater department to expand since it first opened in September 2010. Now, the department performs a three-production season, with students running everything from production and direction to scene construction and design, down to the acting itself.
PBA’s 2013-14 season begins October 9-12 with Barry Kornhauser’s Reeling, a musical play set in 1920s Hollywood. In a similar vein to that of a silent film, the plot follows our hero as he tries to the win the heart of his beloved. Like the Academy Award-winning film The Artist, Reeling integrates a menagerie of music, dance, vaudeville, digital media and visual arts, not to mention a dose of physical theater, in homage to the golden age of film.
