From October 11-13 and 18-20, the American-German Club of the Palm Beaches—originally the Bavarian Club—will celebrate its fortieth annual Oktoberfest festivities in Lantana. What started as a Sunday picnic in 1973 with club members and their family members has now transformed into the largest, most authentic Oktoberfest party in all of Palm Beach County.
Open to the public, the American-German Club pull all the stops. The club will serve up authentic Bavarian fare, including sauerbraten, schnitzel, goulash, leberkäse, thüringer bratwurst and potato pancakes. Brews will be poured at both outdoor biergartens. As an ode to the massive Munich tent, the Hofbräu Beer Hall will serve a full lineup of München quaffs—Hofbräu Oktoberfestbier, Hofbräu Dunkel, Hofbräu Original and Münchner Weisse—poured into either a boot or liter stein. There will also be lve entertainment, all in the name of gemütlichkeit (good times in a social setting).
Live entertainment will embody the international spirit of the festival with traditional dance groups representing Bavaria, Ireland and the Ukraine. There will also be music from the Heldensteiner Band and the Die Lustigen Bayern trio, plus dancing lessons for those uninhibited by the Hofbräu. In true Munich fashion, a parade of flags, keg tapping and an opening ceremony will take place October 12 and 19 at 4:30 p.m. and October 13 and 20 at 4 p.m. But for one of the most entertaining spectacles of the two-weekend celebration, the masskrugstemmen competition—a beer stein-holding contest—is a pretty fun sight to see. Straight out of Beerfest, on October 11 and 18 at 9 p.m., contestants will try their hand holding a stein filled with a liter of beer (a tick more than five pounds) with arms extended parallel to the ground. It may sound easy enough, but that liquid weight is deceiving. And as always, this is a family-friendly event, with children’s activities, carnival rides and games to keep the kiddies busy.
