Manalapan’s only professional theater company, The Plaza Theatre, specializes in comedies, musicals, cabarets and light dramas. Coming off a successful run in 2012-13, Plaza upped its production load to six for the 2013-14 season, kicking things off in October with Brighton Beach Memoirs.
The semi-autobiographical comedy by Neil Simon, Brighton Beach Memoirs is set in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn in September 1937. The story focuses on Eugene Morris Jerome, a teenager trying to deal with his family while thoughts of girls and baseball crowd his prevue. The Depression-era backdrop, paired with a family that consists of a strong-willed mother, an overworked father, a knowing older brother, a Socialist grandfather and a widowed aunt and her two daughters, makes for a crowded coming-of-age story filled with personality.

- Showtimes are as follows: Wednesday at 2 p.m.; Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays at 2 and 7:30 p.m.; Sundays at 2 p.m.
