Science Nights: Weird Science

Science Nights: Weird Science

I don’t know about you, but for me, Halloween just isn’t complete without an old fashion pumpkin smashing. Since I have evolved from the November 1 Jack-o-Lantern toss (what else are you supposed to do with those hollowed-out gourds?), a little pumpkin destruction a la Terminator II-style (cryogenically frozen, then blasted to bits) is in order. The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is celebrating Halloween this year by looking into the weirder side of science with its monthly Friday night party, Science Nights.

Halloween Nights at the Museum - South Florida Science Museum

October’s installment, aptly named Weird Science, is looking at the science behind the scare. From dissecting snakes to petting alligators, the mysteries of reptiles will be revealed, while mad chemists will concoct an array of experiments in the lab, unlocking imaginations. Kiddies and parents are encouraged to don their costumes for the SFSCA costume party, trick-or-treat through the museum and join in the costume parade at 8 p.m.

Arts and crafts, including creating your very own spider web, making dry ice apple cider and even a pretzel wand will have kids busy and full. For the Pink Floyd fan, laser light shows will be rocking in the Dekelboum Planetarium (6:30, 7:30 and 8:30; $4 for adults, $2 for children). But for the coup de grâce, it’s all about a little Siamese Dream. Museum staff will be freezing some squash for Smashing Pumpkins Nitromania, showing how science can be quite the shattering event.

  • The science center will be open for guests to explore. Be sure to check out Savage Ancient Seas before its swims on to its next location. And for the deep space thinker, the observatory will be exploring our solar system, weather permitting.
  • Science Nights: Weird Science opens SFSCA’s doors on Friday, October 25 from 6-10 p.m.
  • Admission is $12 for adults ($5 for members), $8.50 for children (free for members).
