Despite being a young presence in the arts community, Arts Garage, which opened in Pineapple Grove in 2011, offers a variety of art-related activities and events. With The Jazz Project, which is quickly transforming Delray into an international jazz destination; a performing arts academy that offers a classes; and The Theatre at Arts Garage, which is dedicated to bringing the best new American work to stage; Arts Garage has quietly made Delray Beach and Pineapple Grove the center of Palm Beach County’s creative output.
Touted as “a multi-disciplinary cultural hub for musicians, performers, film presenters, visual artists, and arts educators,” The Theatre at Arts Garage will carry a torch of music, performance and theater with opening production of its 2013-14 season, The Longing & The Short of It.
Running from November 1-24, The Longing & The Short of It is a compendium of songs performed by six characters, all longing for love and acceptance. Created by composer/lyricist Daniel Maté, the song cycle has earned him the 2010 ASCAP Foundation’s Cole Porter Award for Excellence in Music and Lyrics as well as the 2013 Kleban Prize for Most Promising Musical Theatre Lyricist. These songs follow characters who are either “acting out lustily at a party, running into an ex in a public place and saying all the wrong things, pleading insanity to keep a relationship from ending, or simply enjoying a nice, quiet self-pity party at home.” They'll be brought to life by local cast of six: Liz Lark Brown, Beth Dimon, Henry Gainza, John Herrera, Noah Zachary and Alix Page. The music driving the songs, also performed live, will be led by Arts Garage Musical Director Paul Reekie on piano, Julie Jacobs on drums, Dave Wilkinson on bass and Bob Bunin on guitar.
Following Longing is the drama The Hummingbird Wars, written by Carter W. Lewis, from January 10 to February 2; the romantic comedy Fighting Over Beverley ,by playwright Israel Horovitz, from February 28 to March 23; and finally another musical by Maté, in collaboration with Will Aronson, The Trouble with Doug, running April 18 to May 11.
