Haute Dogs: Local High-Class Hot Dogs

Jennifer Pfaff

No food says “all-American summer” more than a hot dog right off the grill, and in Palm Beach County, the dogs are high-class hot.

At the Palm Beach Grill, the silver-service kosher hot dog (above) is a whimsical menu staple. Presented on a poppy-seed bun made that day, it comes with a pageantry of diced tomatoes, sauerkraut, fresh coleslaw mixed to order, hand-cut French fries and half of a deviled egg. We recommend ordering as a shared appetizer—the hot dog can be served sliced into smaller bites.

Hailing inspiration from New York City public schools, Aaron and Stephanie Merullo three years ago launched PS561 (left), a school bus-style food truck that dishes out hot dogs—just like the carts on every street corner of the Big Apple. The menu features gourmet toppings and combinations such as the Doug E. Fresh—bacon, cheddar, barbecue sauce, sautéed onions and the truck’s special 561 sauce, a cilantro-cream mixture—plus traditional condiments for purists. Based in Lake Worth, the bus is a regular at the Food Truck Invasion and Gourmet Truck Expo events, and it’s also available for private catering.

And for those who prefer the filet mignon of franks, Kobe beef dogs are ready to order at Burger Bar in Palm Beach Gardens, HotDogOpolis in Boca Raton and BurgerFi locations in West Palm Beach and Delray Beach
