America’s fascination with the infamous tale of two bandits in love continues with Bonnie and Clyde: The Musical, presented by the Florida Atlantic University’s Department of Theatre and Dance from July 5-27.

Set at the height of the Great Depression, the musical tells how the criminal couple first met when Clyde Barrow attempts to steal Bonnie Parker’s mother’s car, and their history of robbing banks and evading capture across the south. As their lust for wealth and fame grows, the heists become increasingly more violent, culminating in an old-fashioned standoff between Bonnie and Clyde and the law.

Written by Ivan Menchell, music by Frank Wildhorn and lyrics by Don Black, Bonnie and Clyde debuted on Broadway in the December 2011, and was nominated for two Tony Awards in 2012, as well as multiple nominations from the Outer Critics Circle Awards and Drama Desk Awards. FAU is bringing its production of this ne’er-do-well love story to stage as part of Festival Rep 2014, the Department of Theatre and Dance’s twenty-eighth annual summer theater series featuring students, faculty and guest professional equity artists.

  • Bonnie and Clyde: The Musical opens on Saturday, July 5 with stagings at 2 and 7 p.m., and will run through July 27 at the University Theatre.
