The holiday bug has bitten downtown West Palm Beach’s weekly block party, Clematis by Night. On December 1, the city will light the 35-foot Christmas tree at the Waterfront Commons as well as debut sand sculptures that have sprouted throughout the city.
Affixed in the Waterfront Commons, the mighty Douglas fir, which will be dressed in tropical decor November 30, is not only large in stature but also big on South Florida yuletide cheer. The lighting ceremony is set for December 1 and will be accompanied by Clematis by Night’s opening act, the Honor Guard men's acapella group, with the main act, Mighty Mongo, to follow.
This year, downtown West Palm added the gift of temporary art to the streets with the Sand & Sea-Sun’s Greetings sandcastle sculptures. Twelve massive sandy sculptures, made with 225-tons of sand, dot the scene throughout downtown West Palm Beach, each representing a unique destination in Florida, from Ponce de Leon and the Fountain of Youth in St. Augustine to that dastardly pirate Gasparilla of Tampa Bay, each destination is meticulously carved in painstaking detail. The coup de grâce is the 25-ton holiday scene, Hot Cocoa Beach featuring "Sandy Claus," adjacent to the Christmas tree on the Waterfront Commons and a 100-ton sculpture in the City Center Plaza representing the City of West Palm Beach.
Though made of sand, the sculptures will be on display through New Years, allowing visitors to visit all of Florida’s wonderful destinations without leaving downtown West Palm Beach.
