Art Affair at CityPlace

CityPlace is doubling down on its commitment to produce arts-related community events and spaces for West Palm Beach residents and visitors. Its latest endeavor is Art Affair, a new 10-day event taking place in downtown West Palm Beach from April 6-15.

Timed to coincide with the eighth annual Downtown West Palm Beach Arts Festival (April 7-8), Art Affair will feature numerous culture-centric happenings. It will also mark the introduction of two large-scale, semi-permanent projects: Steed Taylor’s Genii Loci, a mile-long street tattoo that extends down Rosemary Avenue from Okeechobee Boulevard to Eleventh Street; and “Assemblage: An Organically Grown Exhibition,” a new visual art addition to CityPlace’s Culture Lab (an experiential creative space located in the former Macy’s department store).

“Assemblage” will be on display through December 2018. It will initially feature Ioanna Pantazopoulou’s Oasis, a grouping of nine one-of-a-kind hammocks made from unconventional materials, and Jennifer Steinkamp’s Cultured, a projection of gently swaying pearls nestled within the former Macy’s jewelry section. More artists will be added into the exhibition throughout the year.

Culture Lab and “Assemblage” will be open during the space’s normal hours (Friday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.) with additional Art Affair hours of 3 to 6 p.m. on weekdays. During opening day on April 6, visitors will have the opportunity to meet artist Stephen Vitiello, whose site-specific sound installation, You Are the Magic, occupies Culture Lab’s second floor. Other Culture Lab Art Affair events include a children’s sound recording studio with Vitiello April 7 and yoga classes (bring your own mat, $10 suggested donation) April 7 and 14.

This is just a sampling of the activities taking place during Art Affair. Other highlights include a “Conduct Us” performance by the Palm Beach Symphony, wherein the symphony will invite attendees to try their hand at conducting, at the CityPlace stage on April 8, as well as a fashion show at the new Garala Art space on April 12.

Perhaps the most exciting element of Art Affair is the launch of a new art tour. This 90-minute, docent-led walkabout starts and ends at Hilton West Palm Beach and explores the various art installations and murals throughout CityPlace and the downtown district. The tour costs $40 and includes valet parking and refreshments at the Hilton. Times are scheduled throughout Art Affair’s run, but the plan is for the tour to become a more regular activity, with additional dates to be added.
