Levis JCC Sandler Center Presents Rescuers: Portraits of Moral Courage in the Holocaust

November 3, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The Adolph & Rose Levis JCC’s Sandler Center is proud to present Rescuers: Portraits of Moral Courage in the Holocaust from November 3 – December 22. The Fall Exhibition featured in the Judi & Allan Schuman Museum Gallery and the thought-provoking line-up of events are part of the Sandler Center’s comprehensive and stimulating 2019-2020 Arts, Culture and Learning season.

Originally debuting at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, photographer Gay Block and writer Malka Drucker spent three years photographing and interviewing over 100 people who hid, protected and saved Jews in Europe during World War II. Decades later, the world is ready to look through the tragedy of those years to see some light. Rescuers cannot easily explain why they had the strength to act righteously, nor do their life stories always offer a clue. History gives no promises, but rescuers offer hope, revealing that goodness is, indeed, part of the human spirit.

An opening reception and presentation by Photographer Gay Block will take place on Sunday, November 3 from 2 – 4 pm in which she will share the details of this historical project and the inspirational stories of kindness, compassion, and heroism. This reception is free and open to the public. Local schools and universities are also encouraged to schedule tours of the exhibit.

In addition to the exhibition, guests will be offered the opportunity to participate in an interactive installation titled “Notes on Kindness, Compassion & Heroism,” in which they can contribute personal stories of inspiration in written form to be added to the display.
