“Mark My Words” at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County
March 31, 2017 - May 27, 2017
Words can have serious ramifications. In fact, a single word can trigger the brain to release neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which fuel our emotions and cause us to feel everything from ecstasy to despair. In “Mark My Words,” a mixed media exhibition on display at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County through May 27, visitors can observe the powerful effect of words within the artistic narrative.
The collection features photography, sculpture, illustration, and other works by 15 local artisans including: Joel Cohen’s arresting photograph, American Flag; Amelia Costa’s sculptural and poetic work, The Journey; Raymond Neubert’s vibrant ink on wood, Beauty, which challenges the value of feminine clichés; and Dana Donaty’s Champagne Dreams, peppered with witty phrases plucked from podcasts and e-books. Why does Donaty feature words in her work? “People look passively at art,” she says. “Words slow them down. There’s a whole world to be seen if you just take the time to look at it.” — Kerry Shorr
