SUMMARY:Symphonic Band of the Palm Beaches presents 'Specially for You
DESCRIPTION:The Symphonic Band kicks off its fifty-seventh concert season Saturday\, October 21\, at the Eissey Campus Theatre in Palm Beach Gardens with ’Specially for You\, followed by a repeat performance at the Duncan Theatre in Lake Worth on Saturday\, October 28. Both performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 each or $85 for the five-concert season\, available by phone at 561-832-3115 or online at www.SymphonicBand.org. \n“We are delighted to present our most daring season opener yet. It features a unique Gershwin jazz collage\, a rollicking new cowboy piece from film composer Julie Giroux and marches as you’ve never heard them before\,” said Music Director Mark Humphreys. \nOne of the premier solo alto saxophonists in the country and the band’s new Associate Conductor\, Kyle Mechmet\, will wow the audience with “A Gershwin Fantasy\,” a colorful arrangement that contains many of the composer’s most famous popular compositions\, including “Strike up the Band\,” “Summertime\,” and “Rhapsody in Blue.” \n“The Twelve Gallon Hat\,” a giddy-up\, jump-in-the-saddle-and-strap-yourself-in Western extravaganza by Academy Award-winning composer Julie Giroux is a crowd favorite and a rip-roaring challenge for the band. \n“The Second Suite in F for Military Band (Op. 28\, No. 2)\,” Gustav Holst’s second and last suite for concert band\, is composed of four movements based on English folk songs: March\, Song without Words\, Song of the Blacksmith\, and Fantasia on the “Dargason.” \n“Overture to Orpheus in the Underworld\,” by Jacques Offenbach and arranged by Lawrence Odom\, is an adaptation of the French comic operetta. Loosely based on Greek mythology\, it contains the risqué cancan melody that is famous outside classical circles and is said to have shocked audience members at its premiere. \nAdditional concert selections include “Barnum and Bailey’s Favorite” by Karl L. King and “Pageant” by Vincent Persichetti\, which was commissioned in 1953 by the prestigious American Bandmasters Association. \nAnd what’s a band concert without a march? The program includes two: a Sousa favorite\, “Under the Double Eagle\,” which was composed by “March King” J.F. Wagner\, and “British Folk Song March” by Hiroki Takahashi.
