Face Off: Living Legends at the Norton

The Norton Museum of Art (561-832-5196) challenges visitors to reimagine the practice of portraiture with the exhibit “Living Legends: The Montage Portraits of Robert Weingarten,” on display from July 17 to September 7.

The collection comprises “portraits” of 26 prominent figures, including former Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, primatologist Jane Goodall and composer Stephen Sondheim. Here’s the twist: None of the subjects actually appears in the final pieces. Rather, Weingarten puts a spin on traditional portraits by weaving together images that capture the essence of that subject. Each legend provided Weingarten with personal information about his or her background, interests and experiences so the artist could illustrate the person’s identity and what each holds dear on the inside, instead of focusing on the outside.
