A whimsical exhibition of seemingly weightless works will float into Delray Beach as the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens unveils “Light as Air: The Buoyant Sculptures of Mariko Kusumoto,” on view November 6 to April 5.

Hailing from Kumamoto, Japan, Kusumoto draws inspiration from the serene surrounds of the centuries-old Buddhist temple she was raised in. From painting and printmaking to metal sculpture and now tsumami zaiku (the art of folding and pinching cloth), Kusumoto’s works historically draw on her observations of nature. For this exhibit, visitors will be enchanted by the artist’s fiber art that evokes the buoyant beauty of marine life and botanicals, plus a site-specific installation of floating forms in the gallery.

Learn about Kusumoto’s process and creative journey firsthand during her talk at the Morikami November 7.
