In late January, the James Beard Foundation announced the restaurant and chef semifinalists for its 2023 James Beard Awards, presented by Capital One. Among the nominees are five Palm Beach County chefs: Jeremy and Cindy Bearman of Oceano Kitchen, Rick Mace of Tropical Smokehouse, Pushkar Marathe of Stage, and Lojo Washington of Queen of Sheeba.

Located in Lantana, Oceano Kitchen offers a small daily curated menu designed for sharing, with coastal-inspired locavore cuisine by Jeremy Bearman and simple yet outstandingly satisfy desserts by his wife, Cindy.

Nestled in West Palm’s Antique Row neighborhood, Tropical Smokehouse specializes in Floridian barbecue, a passion of chef Rick Mace, formerly of Café Boulud on Palm Beach.

Also in West Palm Beach, Queen of Sheeba brings Ethiopian cuisine to the Historic Northwest. After closing during the pandemic, chef Lojo Washington is back to share this East African soul food with diners.

Up in Palm Beach Gardens, Stage has gained a local following for its small plates tinged with Indian and global flavors. Chef Pushkar Marathe also recently opened a new restaurant, Ela Curry Kitchen, which focuses on the street food flavors of his childhood
