The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum in Delray Beach will welcome the community for “Preserving Our Stories: The Life and Times of Dox Thrash,” a heritage reception and presentation of a rare, oil-on-canvas painting by the renowned Dox Thrash, on October 9. Ron Rumford, an expert on the artist from the Harlem Renaissance period, will speak.
Supported by The Nancy Chanin Foundation and Louis Haym, the event will take place in the museum’s Main Galleries and adjacent Williams Cottage from 6 to 8 p.m.
The centerpiece of the program is Thrash’s Still Life of Flowers. Guests will discover the intriguing story behind this rare piece and Thrash’s work in the fine art printing technique that he co-invented: Opheliagraph mezzoprint.
The style, artistry, and creativity of the Harlem Renaissance, plus local family histories, will come to life during the evening’s activities. Guests will share their family migration histories and compare experiences with Thrash’s journey from Georgia to Chicago, then to Philadelphia.
The community heritage reception will serve as a family history exchange, art talk, and fundraiser, featuring a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, and a museum membership drive. The Spady Museum is celebrating the 100th anniversary of The Spady House in 2026 with “The House Still Stands” fundraising campaign.
Refreshments will be served. Tickets are $15 for students (with code Ten92025) and $25 for adults. Purchase tickets here.
