The summer season may be winding down, but its sizzle can impact your skin in the long-term. Here, Donna Mainiero, spa director at Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa, shares her skin-saving strategies to help you weather the Florida sun.
PBI: What does a summer of outdoor fun do to our skin?
Mainiero: Summer sun is an excellent way to absorb vitamin D. However, too much sun exposure, even with sunscreen, allows UV rays to reach your inner skin layers. This can cause major damage to skin cells [which can lead to] premature aging and skin cancer.
What is the top skin-care issue we need to address when summer comes to a close?
Many seem to believe that regardless of the lifestyle we choose during particular seasons we can make up for the neglect to our skin routine later on. A daily focus is the key to adapting good habits. Hydration is a major factor in promoting beautiful skin at any age and any season. Also, adding antioxidants to your diet and skin-care routine helps to repair and protect cells from damage caused by free radicals and excessive sun exposure.
What do you recommend clients do between spa visits to aid in skin health and recovery?
I cannot stress enough the importance of hydration. As we know, water is the most vital source of energy in the body. Making water consumption a priority helps with digestion [and in] releasing harmful elements from the body, which affects our skin and improves overall health. Another vital habit for healthy skin is the daily use of serums. Our No. 1 go-to at The Opal Spa is Osea’s Hyaluronic Sea Serum. Hyaluronic acid is nature’s most powerful moisture magnet, attracting a thousand times its weight in water, strengthening the skin’s moisture barrier, and visibly improving elasticity and firmness, all while plumping and smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
What is the biggest thing people tend to overlook in their skin-care routine?
The biggest thing we tend to overlook is that our skin is affected by what we eat, how we eat, and everything that goes into our bodies. Making smart decisions toward healthy habits and adding supplements can slow down the aging process, helping skin recover and show a healthier glow.
