For those prefer to save their shopping for a leisurely Sundays, then The Gardens GreenMarket sponsored in good health by Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center is the place to go. Returning from its summer digs at Store, the Palm Beach Gardens green market is headed back to the sprawling City Hall Municipal Complex for its 14th season on October 4, where it will hold market through May 1, every Sunday – rain or shine – 8 a.m.-1 p.m.
One of the largest green markets in the county, with more than 130 vendors expected each week to setup tents throughout the sprawling market—wear comfortable shoes for this market—there is tons to see and buy. What’s more, the Sunday market time allows for some of the bigger growers and purveyors to pull double duty on the weekends, working the central and south county markets on Saturday, and then heading to Gardens on Sunday, meaning the bounty is that much greater for you, the savvy sustainable shopper.
The markets mission to promote sustainability through locally grown and cultivated, ecologically friendly, wholesome foods, which in turn enhances the community and protects Florida’s land. Aside from the great assortment of produce, foodstuffs and live music, all crafters must go through a thorough jury process, submitting the raw materials, finished product, and photos of the process to be accepted into the market. This ensures that the person manning the tent is the person that made the goods, and who better to discuss the product than the maker?
For the opening day festivities on October 4, the Westminster Trio will perform on the main stage, with cooking demonstrations by Spoto’s Oyster Bar using ingredients sourced from market vendors. On January 10, the PBG GreenMarket will celebrate its fourteenth anniversary with cake! Each year, vendors contribute individual cakes to make a “cake quilt,” with the mayor and city council joining the celebration to cut the cakes for everyone to enjoy.
Offering: Co-op of small growers and farmers with assorted vegetables and fruits, fresh eggs, non-pasteurized dairy products, organic meats, prepared foods (pastas, cheeses, cured meats, baked goods, pastries and more), apple cider doughnuts, gluten-free and vegan goods, and handmade crafts and goods.
Tips: The Palm Beach Gardens GreenMarket is large, with upwards of 140 vendors snaking along the municipal complex roads and parking lots, and thousands of shoppers visiting each week. All this means slim pickings come 12:30 p.m. If you are a picky eater, arrive early to get the first dibs. And don’t worry, Oceana Coffee will be on hand with fresh brewed coffee to make those early morning shopping sprees a little more bearable.
The green market fun does not end come summer. From May through September, everything moves indoors to STORE Self Storage at 11010 N. Military Trail to protect shoppers, products, and vendors from the heat and rain.
