The Boca Ballet Theatre will bring to life one of the most famous classical ballets, Swan Lake, at the Olympic Heights Performing Arts Center from August 1-3. Telling the tragic story of Swan Queen Odette, a beautiful maiden turned into a swan by the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart, and Siegfried, the Russian prince who fell for the enchanted Odette, Swan Lake was adapted from Russian folktales by famed composer Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky—the same creative mind behind the perennial Christmas-time favorite The Nutcracker and the now Disney-fied Sleeping Beauty.

One of the most internationally recognized ballets, Swan Lake has become part of the repertoire in ballet theaters around the world, adapted and infused into a number of films (Black Swan being the most recent), television programs and musical productions, while the musical composition has taken on a life of its own. For the Boca Ballet production, the theater will hold true to the choreography of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, the minds behind the 1895 revival and the most popular version of the ballet.

Filling the title role of Prince Siegfried will be guest artist Simon Ball, principal with Houston Ballet, while the duel role of Odette and Odile (the enchanting white swan and the evil black swan, respectively) will be Sara Mearns, principal dancer with New York City Ballet. Mearns’ double role in Swan Lake has earned her worldwide acclaim, with international choreographer Christopher Wheeldon calling her “one of the most important dancers of her generation.”

  • Boca Ballet Theatre’s staging of Swan Lake will come to life with three performances: August 1 at 7 p.m., August 2 at 8 p.m. and August 3 at 2 p.m.
  • Tickets cost $20-$35 for adults, $10-$25 for children and seniors.
