Profile

When your patients are professional athletes, there is no margin for approximation. Decisions must be precise. Techniques must be advanced. Outcomes must restore not only function, but elite performance. For nearly two decades, that environment has shaped Dr. Phillip R. Langer’s surgical philosophy.
Ivy League–trained and double board certified in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine, Dr. Langer completed three advanced fellowships—sports medicine and arthroscopy, complex orthopedic trauma, and hip arthroscopy.
His training includes mentorship under leaders in the field: Dr. F. Harlan Selesnick, head team physician for the NBA’s Miami Heat; fellowship training at Brown University’s Level I trauma center; and advanced hip arthroscopy training with internationally recognized pioneer Marc Phillipon, MD.
From 2007 to 2011, Dr. Langer served as an orthopedic surgeon and team physician for the NBA’s Miami Heat, the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers, and the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons. In those environments, return-to-play timelines are scrutinized, and surgical execution must be exact.
Today, practicing in Delray Beach and serving the broader Boca Raton and Palm Beach County community, Dr. Langer applies those same performance-driven standards to every patient he treats: thoughtful diagnosis, minimally invasive techniques, and meticulous restoration of biomechanics.
Dr. Langer has developed particular expertise in hip preservation surgery, including arthroscopic treatment of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), labral tears, cartilage injuries, and complex instability in young, active patients. His practice also encompasses advanced arthroscopic and reconstructive procedures of the shoulder, knee, elbow, ankle, and wrist—ranging from ACL reconstruction and cartilage restoration to labral repair and complex ligament reconstruction.
What distinguishes his work is the philosophy behind them.
Dr. Langer prioritizes joint preservation. His approach emphasizes precise evaluation, tissue-respecting surgery, and rehabilitation aligned with surgical mechanics. When appropriate, he integrates biologic therapies such as PRP and other orthobiologics. He applies surgical strategies refined in professional athletics to patients seeking a durable return to sport, work, and active living.Dr. Langer is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and an active member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America.
Since 2006, he has been repeatedly selected by peers to teach shoulder, hip, and knee surgery at national and international courses—an acknowledgment of technical mastery and clinical judgment. He has authored more than 15 peer-reviewed publications and delivered over 25 national and international presentations on topics ranging from complex knee injuries and cartilage restoration to Tommy John surgery (ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction). In addition, Dr. Langer serves as an active consultant to Major League Baseball, advising on elbow injuries and performance-related surgical decision-making at the highest level of the sport.
Academically grounded—Notre Dame (cum laude), Georgetown University (MS in physiology and biophysics; MD), and residency at Brown University—Dr. Langer brings scientific rigor and surgical precision to every case.
Today, as one of the elite surgeons at The Joint Preservation Center, Dr. Langer advances a model of orthopedic care centered on preservation, precision, and performance. He refines his surgical approach through collaboration with leading innovators, including Dr. Justin Saliman—an award-winning orthopedic surgeon and inventor of advanced circumferential meniscus repair technology.
Most of his patients are not NBA players. They are executives, parents, competitive amateurs, and highly active individuals who expect durability—solutions that restore strength, stability, and longevity.
Dr. Langer’s differentiation lies in a sustained pattern of excellence: elite training, professional sports medicine experience, peer-recognized expertise, and a disciplined commitment to minimally invasive, joint-preserving surgery.
In a field where volume is common, his focus remains refinement.
In a specialty where replacement is often discussed early, his emphasis is preservation first. For patients and referring physicians seeking thoughtful surgical judgment shaped by the highest levels of sport and academic rigor, Dr. Phillip Langer represents a standard built not on promotion—but on precision.
