Back in the saddle

Kick off equestrian season by getting back in the saddle with fun horse experiences for riders of all levels

Polo Lessons: Get in on the polo action by taking a swing at the sport. Owned by former 7-goaler Joey Casey, Palm City Polo Club provides a welcoming environment for polo lessons at its world-class facility. Beginners start with riding skills and practice on a hitting cage before moving on to perfecting their swing on horseback and learning strategy. For advanced players seeking to up their game, the club hosts clinics annually in May and low- and medium-goal tournaments throughout the season.

English Riding: Those looking to get back in the ring after many years off, or who have always wanted to learn how to horseback ride, don’t have to resort to lessons with children. Free Spirit Riding Academy & Show Stables has an ongoing beginner adult rider program with both private and semi-private lessons with other adults. Instructors emphasize riding skills and horsemanship, and because Free Spirit is a show stable, riders can progress to hunter jumper instruction as well.

Beach Rides: There’s nothing better than experiencing the surf and sand from a saddle. Locally, Hutchinson Island is the only beach that allows horseback riding on its shores. Fort Pierce–based Tours on Horseback leads riders through Frederick Douglass Memorial Park and onto the beach, while Desert Rose Ranch in Jupiter organizes day trips for riders. In addition, those with their own horses can apply for annual or weeklong permits for horseback riding on the beach through St. Lucie County.

Trail Rides: See Palm Beach County from a new perspective during a scenic trail ride. Alicia Grace welcomes first timers and experienced riders to her barn, Pink Flamingo Stables, for 30- to 90-minute Western-style rides. Grace takes beginners as young as 2 years old on 3-mile routes through Lake Worth’s rural dirt roads and neighboring horse and tree farms, while more advanced riders will walk, trot, and canter the canals.
