Honor one of New Orleans’ most iconic cocktails during National Sazerac Day June 23. With roots stretching back to the 1830s, the Sazerac was born in the lively streets of the Crescent City and remains an enduring symbol of its vibrant spirit. Named after the Sazerac de Forge & Fils brand of cognac, the libation evolved into a bold, aromatic mix of rye whiskey, Peychaud’s Bitters, sugar, and a rinse of absinthe.

This year, Caesars New Orleans is celebrating in style at Octavia. On National Sazerac Day, the elegant bar and lounge will transform into a playground of luck and luxury. A centerpiece of the festivities will be the Paper Fortune Teller Sazerac experience, when patrons put their order in fate’s hands and sip one of eight playful variations—ranging from the classic to decadent flavors like praline and bananas Foster—revealed by dice rolls and paired with tarot cards.

Whether you’re in New Orleans or enjoying from afar, here’s a timeless recipe you can craft at home.

Classic Sazerac

Ingredients

  • Rinse of absinthe
  • 1 sugar cube (or 1/2 oz. simple syrup)
  • 3 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters
  • 2 oz. rye whiskey
  • Lemon peel for garnish

Rinse a glass with absinthe, discarding excess. In a separate glass or cocktail shaker, muddle the sugar cube with bitters until dissolved. Add the rye whiskey and ice and stir until chilled. Strain into the absinthe-rinsed glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.
