Tip of the Hat

Teressa Foglia has made her mark with custom-tailored hats

This past winter, milliner Teressa Foglia visited Palm Beach for the first time and fell in love. On the lawn outside The Colony Hotel, she took private appointments during a mad-hatter-themed trunk show for her eponymous brand.

Alongside her partner, Tyler Hays Wild, Foglia has made her mark with custom-tailored hats. She now counts celebrities such as Cindy Crawford and Gerard Butler among her clientele.

To purchase one of Foglia’s hats, which are made to last a lifetime and cost between $75 to $1,500, is to acquire a piece of wearable art. Think palm trees that have been burnt and embroidered into fedoras or oversized sun hats with floral chin straps in soft pink and yellow prints.

It all started with a hat-making course Foglia signed up for while she was living in Europe five years ago. “I stayed at this beautiful French woman’s home,” she recalls. “She would practice her English with me, and I would practice my French with her, and I would just wake up and go to class every day and learn how to make hats that I liked to personally wear.”

As both friends and strangers begged to buy these bespoke hats right off her head, Foglia decided to open a studio/storefront in New York City as well as a shop in Malibu. She has plans to expand to Palm Beach in the near future. “We are super excited to be exploring the opportunity for opening a custom hat shop in Palm Beach,” Foglia says. Until then, a limited number of hats from the Teressa Foglia spring collection are available at LoveShackFancy in The Royal Poinciana Plaza.
