I’m curating a travel wardrobe that can fit into a carry-on, and it’s proving harder than expected. Can you offer some pointers on creating a chic and functional capsule?
I have always refused to check a bag, so I have been solving this exact problem for decades. First, stop thinking about outfits and start thinking about pieces that play well together. Everything in your bag should be able to pair with at least two other things.
Here is my carry-on: two pairs of pants or skirts in neutrals (I like a high-waisted trouser and a printed silk skirt); three tops that work with both bottoms; one dress that can go from day to evening; a long maxi or a simple shift dress (both can be dressed up or down depending on the shoe and earring); one lightweight blazer, jacket, or cardigan; one pair of flat sandals for daytime; and one pair of heels or embellished sandals for evening. The secret weapon is accessories. They take up almost no space and can make the same black trousers look like three completely different outfits. Stick to fabrics that don’t wrinkle easily, such as silk jersey, crepe, and knits. Roll everything instead of folding and wear your bulkiest item on the plane.
The whole point of a capsule wardrobe is that the limitations force better style. When you can’t bring everything, you only bring the good stuff.
I’m so excited to travel to Palm Beach for the first time! What do I pack—and what do I buy when I’m there—so I can nail the Palm Beach look?
While Palm Beach style may look effortless, it is anything but. The vibe is colorful, polished, and slightly more glamorous than you might expect for a beach town.
This is not a neutrals town, so pack bright colors and prints. Throw in a few great kaftans, a chic pair of wide-leg trousers, silk blouses, a long skirt, at least one outfit that sparkles, flat sandals, a strappy heel or embellished flat, and sunglasses—big ones.
When it comes to what to buy when you arrive, the fun begins. Worth Avenue is one of the great shopping streets in America. It has the big designer names, but the real magic awaits in the little vias that branch off it. These charming alleyways and courtyards are filled with smaller boutiques, galleries, and hidden gems. And don’t skip The Royal Poinciana Plaza, which has a wonderful mix of shops, restaurants, and that very particular Palm Beach energy.
Remember, the Palm Beach look at its best is colorful, confident, accessorized, and just a tiny bit over the top. Lean into that. Nobody here is understating anything, and that’s what makes it so exciting.
