For the third year in a row, Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts’ Jazz Ensemble 1 will travel to New York City to compete in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival this spring.
In preparation for the competition, which honors the top 20 high school jazz bands from across the world, professional musicians will visit each of the admitted schools and programs for in-classroom workshops. The acclaimed musicians will help set the students up for success before they leave for the competition, taking place April 30 to May 2.
On April 2, Emmy Award-winning composer Jerome Jennings will visit Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts, where he will lead a clinic and ensure the students are ready and confident to compete in one of the world’s most innovative jazz education events.
Led by Christopher M. De León, Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts’ Jazz Ensemble 1 is a nationally recognized jazz education program. The program is comprised of three Curricular Jazz Ensembles that meet throughout the school day, as well as two Extracurricular Jazz Combos. This marks director De León’s sixth time as an Essentially Ellington finalist director.
