Mtn Space to Unveil Sibel Kocabasi Works

A new year means new art to explore at Mtn Space gallery in Lake Worth Beach. The gallery will kick off 2023 with “Sibel Kocabasi: Cosmic Force,” a solo exhibition of works by multidisciplinary Turkish-born, South Florida-based artist Sibel Kocabasi, on view January 6 through February 4.

Kocabasi’s new paintings from 2021 and 2022 feature pearlescent, floating color fields that encompass the artist’s vision of a timeless and infinite space. Created during a time of reckoning in Kocabasi’s life, these paintings embody automatic style and position the self within the universe as a form of healing.

“Cosmic Force” will also offer a glimpse into the artist’s new medium: “solar” or “space” blankets developed by NASA in the 1970s for spacecraft insulation, which are often used by refugees crossing dangerous terrain. In her photographs, Kocabasi obscures her identity as the golden blankets swirl around her. Recently, she has adopted the blankets as her new canvas, painting directly on them.

Mtn Space will host a reception January 7, from 6 to 8 p.m.
