Pranati “Pranoo” Kumar, the founder of Rohi’s Readery in the Historic Northwest District of West Palm Beach, is heading back to where it all started: Harlem, New York.
From September 18-20, Kumar, a former New York City school teacher, will host Harlem Homecoming: Back to the Beginning. This three-day immersive celebration will honor multimedia storytelling, identity, and cultural resistance in the heart of Harlem and beyond.
The homecoming honors Kumar’s own Harlem homecoming and Harlem’s legacy. The event also supports the future of Rohi’s Liberation Station, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to honoring historically marginalized communities through a multigenerational literacy learning approach. Proceeds will support the nonprofit’s mission to create spaces of truth, healing, and empowerment through identity-driven learning.
Throughout the three days, guests will enjoy a packed schedule of programming, including:
Day 1: September 18
To kick things off, Soledad O’Brien will welcome guests to her Harlem home for a “Resisting Erasure: A Fireside Chat on Storytelling and the Fight for Liberation” conversation with advocates.
Day 2: September 19
Head to the Penguin Random House headquarters for “Inside the Story: Publishing, Power & Black Genius” with Tre Johnson, author of Black Genius: Essays on American Legacy, and Kathryn Gordon.
Later on, guests will enjoy “The Power of Art to Tell Our Truths: Conversation with Award-Winning Creatives,” a panel discussion with Jeffrey Williams, Isolde Brielmaier, Claudia Hilda, Jasmine Wahi, Tiffany Alfonseca, and José Parla, at WSA NYC.
Day 3: September 20
Get the final day going during “Liberated Motion: A Morning of Power and Presence” hosted by the founding Senior Master Instructor at SoulCycle, Stacey Griffith.
Finally, head to Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theater for “Harlem to the Historic Northwest: Legacy, Liberation and A Night at The Apollo,” with prolific New York-based author Victoria Christopher Murray and Chief Schools Officer of New York’s Ascend Public Charter Schools, Danique Day.
