At just 16, Jupiter High School student Sawyer Tinsley is proving that compassion creates a ripple effect far beyond the kittens she fosters. Since sixth grade, Tinsley has fostered more than 250 kittens through Palm Beach Purrs, an experience that has inspired her to spearhead community fundraisers, a mental health initiative, and more.

In 2022, she launched Flamingo Flocking, a playful fundraiser that secretly places 200 pink flamingos in the yards of Jupiter residents overnight throughout August to raise money for animal rescue efforts. The initiative now brings in roughly $3,000 annually for Palm Beach Purrs. More recently, she expanded her impact with the inaugural Flamingo Run for Rescues 5K at Riverbend Park, which raised $20,000 for four local rescue organizations.
“I hope to broaden funding to more animals in need for the future, but the community support has truly been the most incredible part of it all,” Tinsley says.
Beyond animal welfare, Tinsley founded Pause, a small gathering where local middle school girls spend time with foster kittens while openly discussing stress, anxiety, and the challenges of adolescence. She also recently helped organize a student-led advocacy effort supporting Palm Beach County teachers and public school funding.
Together, her projects reflect a mission rooted in empathy, advocacy, and community connection. “If you’re passionate enough about a cause, you can make a difference, no doubt,” says Tinsley. “I was able to make a 5K race out of nothing with the help of my family and community, all because I had the drive to do something about the issue I believed in.”
