On March 11, the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach presented the Elizabeth L. and John H. Schuler Award to homeowners Jill and Avie Glazer for their Palm Beach residence. Designed by Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan of Studio MK27, the home is Kogan’s first private commission built in the United States. The Elizabeth L. and John H. Schuler Award was founded in 2005 to recognize achievement in contemporary architecture that expresses superior design and complements the architectural history of Palm Beach.
Studio MK27’s minimalist design projects warmth through natural materials and illustrates how a beautiful and livable space can be designed without reliance on variances from the local zoning code. By focusing on building out rather than up, the one-story residence emphasizes a connection with the surrounding gardens and outdoor spaces created by landscape designer Keith Williams of Nievera Williams. The home is a thoughtful variation from the traditional architecture of its Estate Section location—an area defined by Mediterranean Revival-style estates designed by architects Marion Sims Wyeth, Maurice Fatio, and John Volk during the 1920s—that exemplifies how contemporary buildings can coexist with the historic fabric of the community.
Kogan founded Studio MK27 in the late 1970s in São Paulo. The firm is now comprised of 30 architects and various collaborators worldwide. The architects are admirers of the Brazilian modernism generation and seek to rethink and give continuity to this iconic architectural movement. Studio MK27’s projects place value on formal simplicity and extreme care and attention to details and finishings.
Kogan leads a team of architects who have been working with him for over a decade. Since 2001, Studio MK27 has won more than 250 national and international awards, such as: IAB (Institute of Brazilian Architects), São Paulo Architectural Biennial, WAF, Architectural Review, Dedado Minosse, Record House, Leaf, D&AD, Spark, Barbara Cappochin, Iconic, AZ, Buenos Aires Ibero-americana Architectural Biennial, Wallpaper Design Award and Prix Versailles.
