Growing up in South Florida, Ian McCulloch developed a passion for everything ocean related. But it wasn’t until he was working in Gypsy Life Surf Shop and a couple asked him about surf lessons that he considered sharing that passion as an ongoing endeavor.
“Like out of a movie, I was about to say, ‘We don’t offer surf lessons,’ until I stopped myself and said I did them,” explains McCulloch. “I had taught orphans how to surf in Morocco that previous summer, so I used the skills I had learned to teach the couple. From that day on, Boys with Boards was born. It was just me and a couple of my ‘boys’ teaching people with our boards.”

McCulloch now offers year-round lessons to surfers of all skill levels at beaches throughout Palm Beach County. “It’s remarkable being able to teach someone a new skill that often turns into a lifelong obsession in 90 minutes,” he says. “This might be cliché, but I’m constantly taken aback by the zeal and joy each of our students gets from learning for the first time. I thought I might be jaded after seven years, but each lesson is a blessing.”
